This is a very common viral infection and it is estimated that in America alone
that as many as 90% of all people have the cold sore virus and 55 million of
them experience recurrent symptoms.
Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus which become
noticeable from 3 - 10 days after infection and can last as long as
three weeks if not treated. The most commonly infected area is the lips and the
first sign of a developing cold sore is usually a tingling or itchy sensation
along with a small bump which develops into a blister.
There is often some inflammation in the area and fluid and or pus may ooze from
the blister or blisters which scab over once broken and a major concern of those
infected is that of one's appearance. Some people also experience flu-like
symptoms and fever although there is usually less discomfort with recurrence of
cold sores than with the initial outbreak, but the virus can still be very
uncomfortable as when eating.
As cold sore blisters
are very contagious, when infected it
is important not to kiss anyone and
generally avoid intimate contact. You
can even spread them to other parts
of your own body, so be careful when
washing, do not use the same towel
you dried your face with on other
parts of your body. It is unlikely
that the virus would spread over the
dry skin, but it will spread to the
delicate tissues of the genitals.
Once infected, the virus
remains in the body forever and
repeated outbreaks can be triggered
by:
- colds or fevers
- over exposure to the sun
- stress, anxiety & depression
- extreme tiredness
- suppressed immune system.
Treatments for Herpes
Simplex is acyclovir (Zovirax) Colloidal
Silver Cream is reported be very effective and the earlier treatment
commences, the less severe the outbreak.
