Common Diseases > Depression > A Holistic View

Depression is very common in Western countries affecting about 10% of the general population, but the numbers of depressed teenagers is about 18-21% of the teenage population. Historically, anyone who was depressed was more likely to be in the ruling classes and the cure was to simply stop feeling sorry for oneself and get on with life and to a degree this often worked. Today, depression is widely recognized as an illness with prescriptions and sales of antidepressant medications steadily increasing.

What is Depression?
Depression may be described as a lack of energy or vitality and is characterized by, a lack of interest in life, a lack of enthusiasm and diminished libido. For some it is the inability to shake off fear and insecurity and may also be a lack of faith or belief. To the observer, a depressed person may seem withdrawn or anti social.

Teenage Depression
For teens growing up in a world where they have no rights or security, the idea of becoming a responsible adult very daunting. Of course they grow into a very unequal world. The child born in the slums of Calcutta displays an amazing zest for life and is just glad to be alive and is sustained by a deep religious faith, whereas in Western culture with its superficial wealth but little faith, the likelihood of depression is greater.

What Causes Depression?
The causes of depression are many but the main contributing factors are poor health and the medications used to treat health problems, malnutrition, loss or separation, a lack of faith, injustice, bigotry, repression and sadness. Other causes can be the failure to develop dreams and aspirations or to have those dreams and aspirations crushed and torn away. Other causes are to do with brain chemistry; or that the brain is not wired quite the right way as life experiences have been shown to effect brain function.

What happens during depression?
From our experience, there is a thought, a fear or a worry that engages the mind and that the mind cannot let go and a self debilitating, self perpetuating process grows depressing the life force of the individual until there comes a point or time/place where the mind must actually give up and lets go for recovery to take place.

Curing Depression
Medically there is no cure, medically no disease can be cured, only the symptoms relieved, but some things do relieve depression:
  • Desire
yes; desire to be well despite the odds against you, having a strong desire to get well supports all other treatment and medications for health recovery.
  • Drink Water
dehydration is often a cause of headaches and can trigger bouts of depression and drinking plenty of water (2-3 glasses) often relieves headaches and can terminate depression.
  • Diet and Nutrition
we are what we eat, ensure the diet of the depressed is nourishing and ensure you diet has sufficient minerals which conduct energy around the body.
  • Exercise
physical activity gets one into the body and out of the head
  • Support
living alone is a challenge, the support of family and friends is important
  • Education
depression has a cause and somewhere it has its roots and through a process of self study, one may discover and cut out the root that causes depression.
Coupled with finding the root cause, it is of great value to know of the origin of life, the meaning of life and what happens after death.
    • Western thought teaches that everything is permanent, your community, your job, your family is all permanent and you have rights to all of this and if you believe in God, you will have eternal life after death.
Since we know the world is in constant flux, the relationships of those around us are constantly changing, our rights diminish, taxes go up, there are the mortgage payments and all that stuff to buy.
    • But Eastern though teaches that everything in this world is impermanent and life is a gift without any rights, but it is all here to be lived and appreciated. After death you will be assessed and assigned a new life based on the lessons you have learned in your previous life, this is known as Karma.
Eastern religions is richer and far more diverse offering greater support to the population in times of need.
    • While this is not a forum on comparative religion, it is important to know that for all the greatness of our civilization, the bottom line is that you exist, that you are alive. The second line is that for you and me to exist, we need our planetary home and environment. For everything else in life, it is all abstract, it is a projection of our minds. Our civilization, our society, our work, our relationships, our morality and our possessions are all creations of our collective consciousness and their only basis in reality is that we choose to believe. the wisdom pages

For many, this view may be to strong to take and your medicine of choice may well be vallium of similar to dull the pain, but the real solution we believe is in knowing the truth of life and living that truth as well as you can without hurting anyone else and without getting your own head shot off. For a more mainstream view, we have a report on depression in America which applies well to most Western countries.
