Common Diseases > Endometriosis.

The population prevalence of endometriosis is not known exactly, but is estimated to be between 5 to 10% of all women who are progressing through a their reproductive years, and it is the most common cause of pelvic pain that has no cure.

Endometriosis is common in women with infertility and if you've been diagnosed with endometriosis, or you've had one or more of its symptoms (of which its most common symptom is pelvic pain), it's important to realize that you are not alone - help is available.

If a woman has persistent recurring pelvic pain she should begin by assuming she probably has endometriosis and
consult a doctor for a more accurate diagnosis.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for endometriosis. During the reproductive years, endometriosis is simply managed and the goal is to provide pain relief while trying to restrict progression of the process, and find solutions to relieve infertility with hormonal medication, fertility medication or In Vitro Fertilization should that be an issue.

In older women, menopause will often halt the process and relieve most of the symptoms while in younger women with unfulfilled reproductive potential, surgical treatments to remove endometrial tissue and preserving the ovaries without damaging normal tissue are sometimes an option.

In women who do not have need to maintain their reproductive potential, hysterectomy and/or removal of the ovaries is commonly done, however, this does not guarantee that the endometriosis and/or the symptoms of endometriosis will not come back, and surgery may induce adhesions which can lead to further complications.

Managing endometriosis can be a challenge.
Many doctors simply prescribe pain killing medications and new experimental drugs regularly appear on the market and medications can be effective for a time.

Alternatively endometriosis can be managed and the symptoms greatly relieved with the use of Natural treatments which have fewer complications and side effects including:
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine
Herbal medicine
Homeopathy
Naturopathy
Aromatherapy massage
Yoga therapy
