Massage > Rolfing

Tell someone to go and get rolfed and they might like to know what you are talking about. It is a unique blend of education through touch and sensory , a technique that is not well heard of, as it is not so much a maintenance treatment as is other massage but rather a permanent fix.

What is it?
Rolfing works with the single idea of structural integration, aligning the physical body to the force of gravity. It is said to have long-term benefits. In some cases has even changed the actual appearance of people, but its overall aim is to create an efficient structural body, a body that creates a stage to enhance self-healing. The precision of such physical alignment is thought to create an ideal platform for optimal health and functioning.

History
Ida P. Rolf developed the concept, a young lady born in the Bronx of New York in 1896. Rolf earned herself a PHD in Biology and chemistry in her early 20’s before she was plagued by poor health. In search of a cure, one that conventional medicine could not give her she traveled abroad to experience and study unorthodox medicine. It was after continuous disappointment that she began using her own knowledge to create a treatment that would see her body heal itself. Rolf knew that there was a point at which the body could functions at optimal health; she needed to find this point. With her background in science she began viewing the body as an architect or engineer would, dividing it into horizontal and vertical plans. With this she developed the concept of structural integration, or Rolfing, as it is known today.

Theory
The theory is very simple, structure serves function. The Rolfer seeks to align the persons’ body with that of gravity. This is achieved by manipulation of the soft tissue of the body.

Who would use it?
Anyone wanting to improve his or her health will benefit from a Rolfing session. Children, business people or anyone experiencing stress from their current lifestyle will gain relief from Rolfing. It is especially effective in easing chronic pain.

A Session
Rolfing is conducted in a series of ten treatments usually two or three weeks apart. Sessions can last between 1hr to 1.5 hours. As a client you would disrobe to you underwear. There is no use of oil so that maximum friction can take place. The Rolfer may use their forearms, elbows and fingers to ensure deep pressure, this can cause moderate pain might recall past emotional trauma. Expect to pay $100 – 170 per session

The Results do not always take place immediately. Most people usually report greater ease with body movement as well as increased energy, decreased anxiety with an improved feeling of general well being

Currently a pre training curriculum is being written so that people can train within New Zealand. Training is expected to take place in Christchurch or Auckland in 2005. If you are interested in getting Rolfed or becoming a Rolfer you can call 0508Rolfing.
