The
prostate is a small round gland (about the size of a walnut).
Found only in men, it forms part of the male reproductive system and
is located directly below the bladder and wraps around the urethra.
The prostate often continues to grow beyond the age of 40-45
years with abnormal enlargement occurring in 50% of men over 60, and
up to 80% of men over 70, which over time which may affect the
passing of urine.
Symptoms of prostate enlargement are the need to urinate
frequently, or having the feeling that the bladder does not empty
completely, or urine dribbling after you have finished peeing.
Prostate Function The main function of the prostate gland is to produce an alkaline
fluid which mixes with semen during ejaculation protecting the sperm
in the acid environment of the vagina and increase the chance of
fertilisation.
Prostate Disease Although prostate enlargement is very common, it may not be
problem enough to require any treatment, though there are many
nutritional supplements available from health stores which support
normal function and may even inhibit excess growth.
Prostate cancer The most common male cancer (after skin cancer), prostate cancer
does not usually show symptoms until it is well developed as it
grows in the outer section of the gland. The best way of
detection is to have a rectal examination.
It is recommended that all men over 50 exam every 2 - 5 years or
when peeing is a problem. The rectal exam is very simple and only
takes a minute. (The doctor inserts a finger into the rectum and can
feel the prostate).
The other method of detection is a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)
Blood Test a test which examines a protein in the blood. The level
of PSA rises in men who have benign enlargement of the prostate
gland, an infection of the prostate gland or cancer of the prostate.
This method is widely used, but also criticized as being erroneous
and even when positive, a rectal exam and possibly a biopsy
will be done to establish the presence of cancerous tissue.
Treatments are often radiation treatment and/or surgery (prostatectomy) to remove the cancer or even the
whole prostate, or radiation treatment.

Prostate health can be maintained by good diet and nutrition, a
healthy lifestyle with adequate exercise and nutritional supplements
for the prostate such as Ayurstate from

One
important exercise to practice is the pelvic floor lift or kegal exercise. This

reproductive health and it works equally well for men.
The exercise: simply contract or squeeze the muscles around
the anus and hold for a few seconds, release and repeat 10 - 50
times daily.
Doing this stimulates blood flow to your reproductive system,
massages the prostate and also helps to maintain libido.
