Health Products > Hoodia Gordonii
Used
for centuries by the San bushmen of South Africa who consumed Hoodia on a
regular basis during times of food scarcity and on long hunts to reduce the sensation of hunger and thirst.
Hoodia is a cactus-like succulent plant which contains substances that exert
dramatic control over hunger, appetite, and thirst. South African
medical researchers in have identified compounds
called sterol glycosides, present in Hoodia gordonii. The pharmaceutical
industry has been so impressed by research findings with Hoodia that there have been multi-million dollar deals to try to
make drugs or food additives from constituents of Hoodia, however making a drug
or synthetic derivative is not consistent with its traditional use
as an appetite suppressant by native South Africans and is not
supported by complementary health.
The plant, Hoodia is very bitter in taste, but reduced to a powder and
encapsulated taste is not an issue, the whole powder contains fiber, organic material,
antioxidants, and biologically active substances. Hoodia does not contain
any dangerous stimulant molecules, but it does contain substances
that may mimic the effects of glucose on nerve cells in the brain. Controlled
clinical and laboratory experiments have shown that obese
people taking Hoodia have comfortably reduced their calorie intake by
a thousand calories per day.
